How It Works
Understanding percentages is essential for everyday calculations. Learn how to use our calculator and the math behind percentages:
Percentage of a Number
To find a percentage of a number, multiply the percentage by the number and divide by 100.
Example: What is 25% of 80?
Percentage Increase/Decrease
To find the percentage change, subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100.
Example: Find the percentage increase from 50 to 75.
Tip Calculation
To calculate a tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage and divide by 100.
Example: Calculate a 15% tip on a $60 bill.
Discount Calculation
To calculate the final price after a discount, multiply the original price by the discount percentage, divide by 100, and subtract from the original price.
Example: Calculate the final price after a 20% discount on a $100 item.
Final price = $100 - $20 = $80
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about percentages and our calculator.
A percentage is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It is denoted using the percent sign (%). For example, 50% means 50 out of 100, or half of the total.
To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply the decimal by 100 and add the percent symbol (%). For example, 0.75 becomes 75%.
To convert a percentage to a decimal, divide the percentage by 100 and remove the percent symbol. For example, 75% becomes 0.75.
The basic formula for calculating a percentage is:
Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100
For example, if 25 students out of 100 passed an exam, the percentage of students who passed would be (25 ÷ 100) × 100 = 25%.
To calculate a percentage of a percentage, multiply the two percentages together and divide by 100. For example, 50% of 20% is (50 × 20) ÷ 100 = 10%.
Percentage points refer to the arithmetic difference between two percentages, while percentages can refer to relative changes. For example, if a value increases from 40% to 50%, it has increased by 10 percentage points, but it has increased by 25% relative to its original value ((50-40) ÷ 40 × 100 = 25%).
